I'm not sure. We're not using this code right now (used it once when
we tried a more recent version of Mono, but had to revert to 1.2.5 for
production; and memory barrier functions are not in 1.2.5).
Maybe I just tried it wrong and it does actually work. If it does,
that's even better :)
