I am unable to reproduce the problem with Mono 1.1.6:

I wrote a small Gtk# program and am running Mono 1.1.6, and the Idle
handler is working just fine for me.
To compile use:
mcs -pkg:gtk-sharp t.cs
Maybe you have an old version of Mono installed?
