For starters, The component model for GTK# is very different from
those found in WInForms/WebForms ones. I dreamed of making a
compatibility layer because the self-describing components in that
chain-of-containers-as-service-providers model, lends itself to simply
develop extensions of existing controles or writing of powerful new
ones That layer would be an thin, but there's a broad API to cover.
The real blocking "stone" is that also some 'magic' code would be
needed to correctly draw/interact with the widgets at design-time on
VS.NET. As that code would be Windows-specific (only reusable on
SharpDevelop) no one so far was interested on developing such code
(and that would be no small amount of "magic" code, either).
Forgive my ramblings,

I'm trying to become a "Rosh Gadol" before my own eyes.
See http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2004/12/06.html for enlightment.
